Unlike assemblers who source and integrate third-party components, Coherent controls the entire photonics value chain. We grow our own III-V and II-VI semiconductor materials, design proprietary laser cavities, manufacture precision optics with sub-wavelength coatings, and assemble complete systems under one roof.

This vertical integration means every subsystem is co-designed. Our pump diodes are optimized for our gain media. Our beam delivery optics are matched to our resonator output profiles. The result is measurably higher wall-plug efficiency, tighter beam parameter products, and longer mean time between failures than comparable multi-vendor assemblies.

Following the 2022 merger with II-VI Incorporated, Coherent now operates fabrication facilities across 4 continents, maintaining AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certifications at every production site.

1966
Company founded in Palo Alto as one of the earliest commercial laser enterprises. Initial focus: gas lasers for scientific instrumentation and metrology.
1978
Delivered the first industrial CO2 laser for materials processing, opening the market for laser-based metal cutting and welding in automotive production lines.
1998
Expanded into semiconductor and telecom laser markets, supplying excimer laser sources for photolithography and pump lasers for fiber-optic amplification.
2015
