Vector vs Raster Laser Cutting on Leatherette: A Deadline-Driven Comparison

In March 2024, at 4 p.m., a client called needing 400 leatherette badges for a conference the next morning. Normal turnaround? Five days. We had about 16 hours. The question wasn't whether we could do it — it was which process would get us there: vector or raster.

As someone who's spent the last six years coordinating production in a laser fabrication shop, handling well over a hundred rush orders, I've learned that this particular choice can make or break a deadline. If you're working with leatherette for laser engraving, you need to understand exactly what each mode does.

What We're Actually Comparing

Vector and raster are just two ways a laser can move. Vector follows a continuous path, cutting or engraving an outline. Raster scans back and forth across an area, like a printer, building up the image pixel by pixel. Think of vector as a pen, raster as a copier.

When I'm triaging a rush order, I'm not judging them by what looks pretty on a sample board. I'm judging speed, detail, material compatibility, and predictability. Those four dimensions tell you which one will survive contact with a real deadline.

Speed: Vector Wins on the Clock

Vector is faster because the laser head simply moves less. On our coherent laser systems, a simple logo vector path took almost exactly 2 minutes per badge. The same design in raster would have taken 8 minutes or more with the same beam.

Do the math for 400 badges: 2 minutes each is about 13 hours. 8 minutes each is 53 hours. 13 hours is tight; 53 hours is impossible. When a deadline is measured in hours, vector is the only rational choice for simple graphics.

But speed isn't everything. Raster exists for a reason.

Detail: Raster Can Win, But Leatherette Punishes It

Raster produces grayscale, gradients, and photo-like detail. If you're engraving a detailed image into wood or acrylic, raster is the obvious pick. Vector can only do line art and outlines.

Here's the counterintuitive part: on leatherette, raster often makes a mess. The synthetic material absorbs heat and melts ever so slightly. When you scan overlapping pixels, you get scorch marks and a rough surface. Vector, moving fast down a single line, creates a cleaner, slightly debossed edge that can look intentionally designed.

For text and simple logos on leatherette, I now default to vector. If the client truly needs a photo or tonal shading, then raster wins — but only after careful test cuts, usually with reduced power.

Material Behavior: Why UV Laser Matters

Leatherette for laser engraving is more sensitive than it looks. It's often PVC or polyurethane over a fabric backing. The plastic content means it reacts to heat differently than natural leather. With an infrared laser like CO2, you can get charring, smoke, or localized melting. That's manageable if you tune your settings, but in a rush, it adds risk.

UV lasers — 355nm — behave differently. The shorter wavelength creates a colder, more controlled ablation. Less heat transfers into the material, which is why UV is excellent for fine marking on heat-sensitive plastics and synthetic leathers. It's not a replacement for CO2; UV lasers generally don't cut thick leatherette as quickly. But for fine engraving, UV is a real advantage.

If you're following coherent laser news today, one notable trend is the move toward multi-wavelength platforms — combining IR and UV sources so shops can switch from cutting plywood to marking leatherette without buying a separate machine. That kind of flexibility matters when your clients send a mixed bag of jobs.

The Real Test: Reliability Under Pressure

Every equipment comparison talks about speed and quality. Hardly anyone talks about predictability. When a deadline is hours away, the best process is the one you can guarantee.

Vector is predictable. A clean toolpath means you know exactly how long it will take and what the result will look like. Raster is more finicky: scan spacing, power, focus height, and even material thickness variations all change the output. On leatherette, the difference between a great result and a burned surface can be a few percent of laser power.

Back in 2023, we lost a $15,000 contract because we tried to raster a detailed shaded logo onto a synthetic leather patch. The test sample looked fine. But at scale, heat buildup caused the material to shrink and discolor. We salvaged part of the job with vector outlines, but the client had already moved on. That's when we implemented our 48-hour rule: any leatherette job under two days ships in vector mode unless the design absolutely requires raster.

On the March 2024 job, I almost stayed with raster because the client wanted an intricate inner pattern. We ran a 10-minute test on a scrap piece. The raster setting melted the leatherette surface. So we switched to vector for the outer cut and used a UV laser for the fine inner detail. Delivered the badges with three hours to spare.

I wish I could say I was confident the entire time. I wasn't. After approving the toolpath, I kept second-guessing — what if the UV mark didn't hold up? Didn't relax until I saw the finished pieces. But that's part of the job.

So Which One Should You Use?

Stop asking “which mode is better” and start asking “what does the job actually need?” Here's a practical framework:

  • Vector for: simple logos, text, contour cutting, quick prototypes, and any deadline measured in hours.
  • Raster for: photo-like images, gradients, full-surface textures, and designs where detail matters more than speed.
  • UV laser for: fine marks on heat-sensitive materials like leatherette, especially when avoiding scorch marks is critical.
  • CO2 or fiber laser for: cutting thicker materials at speed; pair it with vector mode for clean edges.

One more thing: always test on the actual material first. A scrap piece takes five minutes and can save you from ruining an entire batch.
